OpenRouter is a service that gives you one account and one API key to reach many AI models from different companies. Instead of signing up separately with each provider, you add credit once and choose a model per task. This guide explains how OpenRouter works, when it's a good fit for screen recording work, and how to use it with Cinematic Recorder.
How OpenRouter works
Think of OpenRouter as a switchboard. Your app sends a request to OpenRouter with your key and the name of the model you want. OpenRouter passes the request to the company that runs that model, gets the answer, and sends it back. You pay OpenRouter from your prepaid credit, and it settles with the model providers.
Because everything goes through one standard format, an app only needs to support OpenRouter once to give you access to a large catalogue: big commercial models, smaller fast models and open-weight models hosted by various companies.
What it's not
OpenRouter doesn't make its own models, and it doesn't make models smarter. It's a convenient doorway. The quality you get depends on the model you pick.
Why creators like one key for many models
- Try before you commit. Test a few models on the same job, such as writing a video description, and keep the one you like.
- One bill. You top up one balance instead of managing several accounts and cards.
- Cheaper options for simple jobs. Many small models cost very little and are fine for titles, summaries and caption drafts.
- Backup when one provider has trouble. If a model is slow or unavailable, switch to another without making a new account.
- Access where direct sign-up is hard. Some creators find it easier to pay one service than several, depending on the payment methods they have.
Things to watch out for
Using a middle layer has trade-offs. Being aware of them helps you choose calmly.
- Another party sees your requests. Your data passes through OpenRouter and then to the model's host. Read OpenRouter's privacy settings; it usually lets you control whether providers may log or train on your data.
- Prices vary a lot by model. Always check the price per model before using it. A large model can cost far more than a small one for the same job.
- Free models have limits. Some models are listed as free, but they often have strict rate limits and may log prompts. Don't send anything private to them.
- Quality differs. The same model name from different hosts can behave slightly differently.
Setting up OpenRouter
- Go to openrouter.ai and sign in, for example with a Google account.
- Open the Credits section and add a small amount to start.
- Open Keys and create a new API key. Name it something clear like "Cinematic Recorder phone".
- If offered, set a credit limit on the key. This caps how much that single key can ever spend.
- Check the privacy or data settings in your account and choose what you're comfortable with.
- Copy the key and keep it private.
Using OpenRouter in Cinematic Recorder (once it is supported)
- Open the app's AI or "bring your own key" settings.
- Choose OpenRouter as the provider and paste your key.
- Pick a model. Start with a small, low-cost one for text tasks.
- Save. You can come back any time to switch models.
Like every key in the app, it's stored in Android Keystore and never sent to our servers. More details are on the features page.
Honest status check: captions from your speech work today, with free daily credits or your own OpenAI or Gemini key. The AI editing assistant, filler-word removal and AI translation are still coming soon. Everything else in the editor works today without any key, including auto zoom, cursor effects and reframing.
Which model for which job?
| Job | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Titles, descriptions, hashtags | Small, fast, cheap text model |
| Summaries of long transcripts | A model with a large context window |
| Understanding a screenshot | A model that accepts images (vision) |
| Bangla text | Test a few; check spelling and tone yourself |

OpenRouter vs. a direct provider key
If you already know you'll use one provider's models, a direct key such as an OpenAI API key keeps things simple and means one fewer company handles your data. If you want flexibility, testing or a single bill, OpenRouter is convenient. Many people keep both: a direct key for daily use and OpenRouter for experiments.
FAQ
Is OpenRouter free?
Signing up is free. Most models cost money per use, charged from your prepaid credit. Some models are listed as free with tight limits; check the model page before using one.
Is OpenRouter safe for my screen content?
It adds another company in the path, so review its privacy settings and the policies of the model host. Never send passwords, OTPs or banking screens to any cloud AI.
Can I set a spending cap?
Yes. Prepaid credit already limits your spending, and you can usually set a credit limit on each key as well.
Do I still need other keys?
No, one OpenRouter key will be enough. Today the app takes an OpenAI or Google Gemini key, and you can switch between the two.
