More and more apps now have a settings screen that says "Add your API key". That's BYOK — bring your own key. Instead of the app paying for AI and charging you a bundled subscription, you connect your own account with an AI provider and the app uses it directly. This guide explains what a BYOK AI app is, why developers are choosing this model, and whether it makes sense for you.
What "bring your own key" means
AI providers such as OpenAI, Google (Gemini) and OpenRouter give you an API key — a long secret code linked to your account. Any app that has this key can send requests to the AI on your behalf, and the cost is charged to your account.
In a BYOK app:
- You create an account with the AI provider you prefer.
- You create an API key there.
- You paste the key into the app's settings.
- When you use an AI feature, the app sends the request to that provider using your key.
Some apps also support local AI tools such as Ollama, which run models on your own computer, so nothing goes to a cloud provider at all.
Three benefits of a BYOK AI app
Benefit 1: you control the cost
With bundled AI, the app maker has to guess how much AI everyone will use and price a subscription to cover it. Light users end up paying for heavy users.
With BYOK, you pay the provider only for what you actually use. If you use AI once a week for a short task, the cost is often very small. You can also:
- See your usage on the provider's dashboard.
- Set spending limits on many providers.
- Choose cheaper or faster models for simple jobs.

Benefit 2: better privacy
In many bundled AI apps, your content goes from your phone to the app maker's server, and then to the AI provider. That's one more company that handles your data.
In a well-built BYOK app, requests go straight from your device to the provider you chose. The app maker never sees your content. You also decide which provider's privacy terms you trust, or you use a local model and keep everything on your own network. For more, read is AI safe for screen content.
Benefit 3: choice and flexibility
- Pick the model you like. Different models are better at different tasks and languages.
- Switch anytime. If a provider changes prices, move to another without changing apps.
- One key, many models. Services like OpenRouter give access to many models with a single key. See OpenRouter: many models, one key.
- Keep using the app without AI. In good BYOK apps, AI is an extra, not a requirement.
The trade-offs
BYOK isn't perfect for everyone. Be honest with yourself about these:
- A little setup. You need to create a provider account and a key. It takes a few minutes the first time.
- Payment setup. Many providers need a payment method for paid usage, though some offer free tiers with limits.
- Separate bills. AI cost appears on the provider's bill, not in the app.
- Key safety is your job. Treat the key like a password.
How to use a key safely
- Create a separate key for each app, so you can revoke one without affecting others.
- Set a monthly spending limit on the provider's dashboard if it offers one.
- Only paste keys into apps you trust, and check how they store them.
- Delete keys you no longer use.

How Cinematic Recorder does BYOK
Cinematic Recorder is a BYOK AI app by design. You can connect OpenAI or Google Gemini today; OpenRouter and locally-run Ollama are coming soon. Your keys are stored in Android Keystore on your phone and are never sent to our servers. Your videos stay on your phone too.
AI is completely optional: recording, auto zoom, cursor effects, reframing and export all work with AI turned off. Captions from your speech already use the key you choose, or free daily credits if you have no key. The "Ask AI" editing assistant and AI translation are still coming soon. See the bring your own AI key feature page, then download the app to try it.
FAQ
Is a BYOK AI app cheaper than a subscription with AI included?
For light and moderate users it often is, because you pay only for what you use. Very heavy users should compare their actual usage costs with bundled plans.
Is it safe to paste my API key into an app?
It is if the app stores it securely on your device and sends it only to the provider. Use a separate key per app and set a spending limit for extra safety.
Do I need a credit card for an AI key?
It depends on the provider. Some have free tiers with limits; paid usage generally needs a payment method on the provider's site.
Can I use AI without any cloud provider?
With a local tool like Ollama running on your computer, yes — support for it in Cinematic Recorder is coming soon. It needs a reasonably capable computer, and your phone must be able to reach it on your network.
BYOK puts you in charge: your key, your provider, your bill, your data. If that sounds right, you'll feel at home in Cinematic Recorder.
