Screen recording stops by itself? How to fix it on Android

· 6 min read · বাংলায় পড়ুন

Few things are more frustrating than a 20-minute take that ends after 6 minutes because the recorder quietly gave up. If your screen recording stops automatically, the cause is almost always something on the phone side: an aggressive battery saver, a background limit, low storage, or overheating.

Work through the fixes below in order. Menu names differ by brand and Android version, so treat the paths as a general guide; on most phones you will find similar options.

First, notice when and how it stops

The pattern points to the cause:

  • Stops after you switch apps or lock the screen → battery optimisation or background limits.
  • Stops after a fairly consistent length → storage space or file size limits.
  • Stops when the phone gets hot → thermal protection.
  • Stops when a call or alarm comes in → audio focus or interruption.
  • Stops at random, and the app closes → low memory or an outdated app version.

Fix battery and background limits

1. Turn off battery optimisation for your recorder

This is the most common cause, especially on Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO, realme, OPPO, vivo and some Samsung phones. Battery savers close apps they think are idle, even while recording.

  1. Open Settings → Apps and find your recorder.
  2. Look for Battery or Battery usage.
  3. Choose Unrestricted or No restrictions (sometimes called "Don't optimise").

Brand-specific steps are in our guides for Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO and realme, OPPO and vivo.

2. Allow background activity and autostart

Some phones have extra controls beyond battery optimisation:

  • Autostart or Auto-launch: allow it for the recorder.
  • Background activity: allow.
  • Lock the app in recents: open the recent-apps view, long-press or pull down on the recorder card and choose the lock icon, if your phone offers it.

Also turn off any system "power saving mode" while recording. It often limits background apps and can lower performance.

Fix storage and heat problems

3. Free up storage space

When storage runs out, recording must stop. A 1080p, 60fps recording can use a lot of space per minute, so check that you have plenty free before a long session.

  • Delete old recordings you have already exported and backed up.
  • Clear large downloads, cached videos in social apps and duplicate photos.
  • Lower resolution or frame rate if a very long recording doesn't need maximum quality.

Our screen recording file size tips explain how settings affect size, and backing up your recordings helps you clear space safely.

4. Keep the phone cool

Recording, especially at high resolution while running a game or heavy app, makes the phone work hard. When it gets too hot, Android may slow down or stop demanding tasks to protect the battery.

  • Remove thick cases during long sessions.
  • Don't record while charging fast in a hot room, if you can avoid it.
  • Close apps you aren't using.
  • Try 30fps instead of 60fps for long recordings.

Other causes worth checking

5. Check permissions and interruptions

  • Screen capture permission. Android asks each time you start. If you dismiss it or another app takes over capture, recording ends.
  • Calls. An incoming call can interrupt audio capture. Turn on Do Not Disturb for long recordings.
  • Another recorder or screen sharing app. Only one app can usually capture the screen at a time. Close video call screen sharing before recording.

6. Update the app and Android

Bugs that cause stops are often fixed in updates. Update your recorder from Google Play and check for system updates in Settings. Restart the phone afterwards; a fresh start clears memory and stuck background processes.

7. Split very long sessions

For lectures and gameplay of an hour or more, recording in parts is safer. If something goes wrong, you lose one section, not everything. Cinematic Recorder's floating controls let you pause and resume from any app, and templates like the lecture template help you keep sections consistent. Read our long screen recording guide for a full setup.

8. Restart and test again

After changing several settings, restart the phone so they all take effect together. Then repeat the same recording that failed before, in the same app and for about the same length. If it now survives, you know the fix worked. If it still stops at the same point, note the time and whether the screen was locked, which narrows down what's left.

How Cinematic Recorder helps

Cinematic Recorder records at the resolution and quality you choose (60fps and 1080p+ with Premium; the free plan records up to 720p at 30fps), shows a live mic level meter so you can see audio is working, and keeps floating controls on screen so you always know recording is active. Your recordings are saved in the projects list on your phone. Look through the recording features to see all the options.

Tip: Before an important session, do a two-minute test: start, switch apps, lock the screen for 30 seconds, unlock, then stop. If that test survives, your settings are probably right.

FAQ

Why does my screen recording stop when I lock the phone?

Usually battery optimisation or background limits. Set the recorder's battery usage to unrestricted and allow background activity.

Is there a time limit on Android screen recording?

Android itself does not set a short limit, but storage space, heat and battery settings can end a recording early. Some built-in recorders have their own limits.

Why does recording stop when I get a call?

Calls take over the phone's audio and can interrupt recording. Turn on Do Not Disturb. Note that call audio can never be recorded on Android.

Will I lose the recording if it stops?

Usually the part up to the stop is saved, but a sudden crash can sometimes damage the file. Splitting long sessions into parts reduces the risk.

Fix the battery setting first, check storage second, keep the phone cool third. Those three solve the vast majority of recordings that stop on their own.
