A smart cursor viewers can actually follow

Smoothing, spotlight and click effects turn jittery pointer movement into calm, easy-to-follow motion.

In a raw recording, the pointer often shakes, jumps and disappears against busy backgrounds. Viewers spend their energy hunting for it instead of learning. The smart cursor in Cinematic Recorder fixes this in the editor, giving you smooth cursor screen recording without re-recording anything. It smooths the path, can add a soft spotlight around the pointer, and shows clear effects when you tap.

What the smart cursor does

The smart cursor is a set of pointer effects applied after recording, on top of your original video:

  • Cursor smoothing: small shakes and sudden jumps are turned into gentle, steady movement from one point to the next.
  • Spotlight: the area around the pointer stays bright while the rest of the screen dims slightly, so the eye goes straight to the action.
  • Click effects: each tap can show a visible pulse. These are covered in detail on the click animations page.
  • Focus highlight: draw attention to one part of the screen when the pointer alone is not enough.

Like every edit in the app, these effects are non-destructive. You can switch them on, off or adjust them at any time before exporting.

How it works

While you record, the app keeps track of the pointer and tap positions over time. In the editor, that path is smoothed: instead of copying every tiny wobble, the pointer moves along a calmer curve between the places that matter. The result still goes exactly where you went, just without the jitter.

The spotlight and focus highlight then use the same position data to decide where the viewer should look. When you combine them with auto zoom, the frame moves in and the pointer stays clear and easy to spot. Our guide to smooth cursor movement in videos explains why calm motion feels more professional.

When to use it

  • Coding and technical tutorials: code screens are dense, and a spotlighted pointer shows which line you mean. See our tips to record a coding tutorial.
  • App walkthroughs: show the path through menus without a nervous, shaking pointer.
  • Product and SaaS demos: calm movement looks confident and polished.
  • Lessons for students or family: beginners follow a clear, slow pointer far more easily.

For fast games or content where the pointer is not important, you can leave the effects off and keep the recording as it is.

Step by step in the app

  1. Record your screen as usual. Move with purpose and avoid waving the pointer around while you talk.
  2. Open the project in the editor and find the cursor options.
  3. Turn on smoothing first and play back a short section to check the feel.
  4. Add the spotlight if the screen is busy, and add click effects if taps are important to the lesson.
  5. Preview the whole video, then export in 16:9, 9:16 or 4:5.
Tip: Use one or two effects at a time. Smoothing plus click effects is enough for most tutorials; add the spotlight only for busy screens.

Frequently asked questions

Does smoothing change where I tapped?

No. Smoothing only calms the movement between points. Taps stay at the same position and time, so the video still matches what really happened.

Can I remove cursor effects later?

Yes. Edits are non-destructive, so you can turn any cursor effect off, change it, or go back to the original recording whenever you like.

Does the smart cursor need AI or an internet connection?

No. The cursor effects are part of the editor and work with AI turned off. Your video stays on your phone; we never upload it.

A calm pointer is a small change that makes a big difference. Turn on smoothing, add a click effect, and your viewers will follow every step.
